Commonly
known as Dog Tooth Violets, they derive their name from their unusually
shaped bulbs, which indeed, resembles a dog's tooth. Perhaps they are one of
the most rewarding
of all spring bulbs, as not only are their graceful blooms spectacular, the
array of differing foliage types makes an all round attractive plant.
Partial shade and moist, well drained soils provide best results with the
yellow varieties proving the easiest to grow.
